A cause close to the hearts of many players, Marrawah 50 and Over Cricket Club has donated $1500 to the Leukaemia Foundation.

It was February last year, Noel and Pauline Grey had recently returned from attending the McGrath Foundation’s Pink Test when Pauline received the news she had multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells in bone marrow.

Pauline began six rounds of chemotherapy before undergoing a stem cell transplant in November.

The club, with Pauline in mind along with many others, decided to host a fundraising event to support the foundation providing support to so many.

More than 50 members attended the evening, giving generously.

From there, the club formed a sub-committee to fundraise for the next Circular Head Relay for Life event.

“Given we could raise $1500 in one night, I think we can raise a big figure,” says club member Marty Burke. “Every little bit goes a long way.”

Amber Laidler, blood cancer support coordinator for the Leukaemia Foundation, was in Smithton last week to accept the donation.

“This funding will support people with blood cancer, from support services, accommodation, to electricity and phone bills,” says Amber.

“We spend more money in Tasmania than is raised in the state, so it goes straight into the pockets of people who need it.”

Donations also enable the foundation to continue research.

While Pauline still has a long road ahead, for now she is on the right track to recovery and remission.
