Largest flower of the sea

Largest flower of the sea

The team at Marrawah Kelp Pty Ltd recently made an exciting find: the largest bull kelp they’ve seen in 24 years. Collected from Stinking Beach in Temma, Tasmania, the impressive specimen weighed in at an astonishing 250 kilograms and measured at 15 metres long. Known as the largest flower of the sea, Durvillea potatorum, is a robust species of bull kelp found in southern Australia. This discovery is a significant size difference compared to the average bull kelp, which typically weighs around 20 kilograms and approximately five meters in length. This remarkable find is a great boost for the local business and highlights the unique marine treasures found within Circular Head.
