Vale Ian 'Snow' Nielsen

Previous Next

Ian Andrew Nielsen , “Snow”, was born on September 27, 1935 in New South Wales, one of nine children to parents Peter and Ethel.

Moving to Tasmania in 1953 Snow worked on a farm before joining the Hydro Electric Commission and moving to Smithton.

Boarding with a family in Havelock Street, Snow soon met and married Diane, “the girl over the beck fence”.

Snow and Diane went on to have eight children, Tony, Jenny, Stephanie, Peter, Michael, Andrew, Wendy and Rodney (dec); 10 Grandchildren and 10 Great Grandchildren.

Family was very important to Snow and he taught his children, and in turn, their children that everything is a team effort, to take a disciplined approach, the importance of structure and was a stickler for being on time.

Snow was known by his family and friends to be witty, with a great sense of humour. He was humble yet driven, and never sought the glory.

Snow joined a first aid course after witnessing a work place accident and from there his involvement in the Tasmanian Ambulance Service, the SES and his selfless commitment to the community of Circular Head was born.

A picture speaks a thousand words and over the last 50 years 'Snow' has appreared in many editions of the Chronicle. We have included a selection of these in the photo gallery.
